14 Prompts – Joe Bunting
What are your surroundings saying to you?
THE PROMPT
Two choices:
Think of an autumn memory. Choose one detail from
that memory and describe it. Continue writing for 30
minutes.
Go outside. Describe the most arresting thing you see.
Then continue writing for 30 minutes.
“Shhhhhh,” I lift my hand up in a stop sign motion. “I’m breathing here and now!” I exclaimed. I don’t know which one of my senses to pay attention to first. It’s like this every time I come down the crumbling, uneven stone pathway. Snaking left then right, lightly stepping and hearing the slap, slap of my sandaled feet as I step carefully until I round the last corner and arrive at Crane Beach.
First, my nose catches the moist, salty tang in the air. So good! As we walk closer to the water we have two choices. We can turn to the left and just enjoy the view, then take a little stroll in that direction, or we can turn to the right and look at the cliff we’ve been challenged to jump off of–at least once.

But first I think I’ll just stay here for a moment and listen with all my senses. Now my eyes are under the spell of the sea and mesmerised by her deep turquoise colored robe she wears like a diamond tiara on her majestic head. Do you hear her? She’s whispering, come in and enjoy the bath water. It is warm and sweet and good for your skin. Come… her voice fades as she recedes and then semi-roars as her tendrils rush back onto the sand-covered beach; enticing me once again.
The caw, caw of a bird momentarily hauls my attention away from the turquoise robed beauty, but quickly with her mesmerising song she has me. The swoosh, plink, plink, sound of the water hitting the rocks makes me happy. I want to skip this way and that and play catch me in the folds of her beautiful turquoise robe.
Wait now, I’m being dragged off to the right side, to the cliff side. Do you hear the challenge? It’s at the very edge. The rocks that are jutting into the sea. That’s where we have to jump from. I’m scared. I hear the challenge and I so very drawn to the beauty of her. I believe she will embrace me if I let her. Will she have soft arms or will she be rock hard and slap me?
I don’t think I will have a choice. The voices behind me are getting louder and clamoring for attention. Yet there are also the voices in front of me, of the ones that take the plunge, and that’s exhilarating and scary, too.
She’s calling me. I have to heed the call. It’s my turn. I run. I jump. And I scream all the way down. I stop screaming to take another breath and still I’m falling towards her roaring turquoise robe. She embraced me with a granite bosom but soothed me quickly after, proud of my achievement.
